Personality:
Spoilers: Rei is dead. She's been dead for a while actually, though through a strange series of events she ends up forgetting this fact. In life, Rei was a terminally ill girl named Niko. Her mother left her shortly after she fell ill and had to be confined to the hospital. Her father is never mentioned at all. Understandably, this left poor Niko with a lot of emotional baggage and a pretty poor image of herself. Her parents didn't want her, the closest things she had to friends were the nurses and the sick girl who stayed in the bed next to hers, and she didn't even have good health. She became incredibly jealous of people who were able to live normal, happy lives. Because above all else, that's the thing she wanted most. She wanted to be able to go to Yazogami High and make lots of friends, maybe meet her Prince Charming and one day marry him...just incredibly normal things that most teenage girls either a) take for granted because they aren't terminally ill or b) also wish for because it's a normal teenage girl thing. In the end, however, she gets none of her wishes and dies on the operating table. In death, she falls into despair over the fact that her life had no purpose or meaning. Her feelings of jealousy intensify into a hatred of the living and "why was I even born!?" becomes her catchphrase.
As Rei she is finally able to go to Yasogami High (or a fake one made from her memories, anyway) and live a normal high school girl's life (not really but it FEELS like it is and that's what matters). She feels none of the despair, pain, jealousy, or hatred that she felt in life or immediately following her death. But despite how it sounds, this is not a good thing. In her highly delusional state, Rei is unable to pass on. And the longer she remains that way in the rift, in a culture festival that never ends the more at risk she becomes of disappearing forever. Not only that, but without her memories, she loses a big part of her own identity. Her personality is much more malleable in the beginning of the game, easily affected by others. The biggest constant seems to be her intense love of food, as Rei is almost always seen snacking on something. It's later revealed that her voracious appetite was not really for food, but rather for life itself.
